what about checking samar instead of mindanao? less chances of encountering islamic separatists in the visayas.  im not saying that these guys are all around mindanao. theyre mostly confined to the western part of the region but then again its just one big island. though i think youd be better off traveling the road to mati than loitering around in davao city smiley

surf season? been watching wave patterns for some time now, honestly, dont think that theres such a thing here, waves can hit you at the most unexpected moment and flat spells can last for months even during the so called surf season, maybe its the erratic weather? smiley

prejudice against people in surfcamp? we were discussing thefts that happened in the surf resorts in san juan, werent we?  coincidentally an incident in surf camp started the discussion. what happened in surfcamp surely happened in the other resorts too. what was emphasized in the discussion was the fact that thefts happen all over the world, and if you loose something inside a hotel or a resort, theres no one else to blame but yourself. i dont see any prejudice against surf camp people here? i lost some valuables in that place once, but i still stay there whenever i visit san juan for a surf, though i now take extra precautions to avoid losing my stuff.
a new concern for phils surfers?

Man-eating white sharks sighted off Bataan
By Ding Cervantes
Publish Date: [Saturday, May 24, 2003]

LIMAY, Bataan — Fisheries experts and villagers here are baffled by the sightings of man-eating white sharks in the waters of this coastal town.

For a while, fishermen here and in neighboring Orion have refrained from venturing off the coast for fear that they might suffer the fate of a resident of Barangay Luz whose entire arm was snapped off by a white shark a few weeks ago.

"It was the first reported sighting of white sharks in the area," said fisheries enforcement officer Danny Abrera.

White sharks, scientifically known as carchorodon carcharias, have been called "man-eaters" in the United States and "white death" in Australia.

White sharks have also been sighted in the waters of Palawan and Mindanao.

Abrera said reported sightings of the marine predators have caused panic among local fishermen, particularly dynamite users who have to retrieve their catch under water after the blast.

But he said the panic has dissipated following news that a white shark, a pregnant female about six meters long, was killed late last month.

"But they reported seeing at least two (white sharks). The local folk presume that the smaller one is male, although they also reported seeing other smaller white sharks," Abrera said.

i not much of a believer in surf schools or lessons, if youre a total newbie to waveriding its your passion for it, preseverance and personal efforts thats going to improve your skills. unless you can surf everyday, keeping yourself fit is good. maybe, a good instructor can help,  but on a good day, say during those days with nice clean overheads, i bet youre going to be out there on your own and the instructors going to be having a grand time in the lineup chasing those waves, overheads can be quite overwhelming for newbies but the only way to improve your surfing would be to charge those waves. will you do it?

safety? theres always a risk to surfing, all sorts of weird stuff can happen, leash snapping in the middle of a huge swell, a board cracking your head, a wipeout pinning you underwater. but im guessing that the numbers will show more people died in car accidents. its your call. have you ridden a wave? would you risk it in exchange for that short fleeting euphoric moments of waveriding? again its your decision, surfing is a very personal experience, its different for everyone, my take on it, as long as youre enjoying yourself, go out there and live life! keep on surfing smiley

wasnt the worst but it was scary alright, i think it was an overhead day in san juan. surfing the beach break, trying to paddle out during an outside set, my board however, was dragged by a wave and the leash snapped. was floating out there without a board, watching my board being pushed towards the beach when this aussie guy got near me and let me hang on to his board. at first i thought he was going to help bring me out of the water, but instead he said, "ok boy, now go swim back to the beach and get your board"! i did  undecided

youll find the so called "crushers" everywhere, even people who dont seem to talk like one or look like one, even way before blue crush hit the big screen, so why get ourselves pissed about it? in the end its their loss, whos enjoying the waves after all? certainly not one among this type of people. i say, just keep on surfing smiley
