NOOO!!We havent had ANY decent swell in about 3 weeks! .....I've started a surfing club and tomorrow is our first club day,but it looks like we will not be greeted by any waves in the morning!Right now though the winds have picked up....so FINGERS CROSSED

yah...I got rejected!DAMN TALL POPPY SYNDROME!hahaha....

there were a few LITTLE waves coming through at the Noosa rivermouth yesterday.They were small,but still forming perfectly..so that was fun on the mal.The weather..everything is going crazy at the moment though..damn it's 12 degrees here and the day before it was 35!indecisive weather,stupid winds,fires,storms,drought,terrorists..rah!

I'm not local,but thats what has been told to me many a time.

There's a couple of local guys who do surf coaching...Ian Saguan(?) and Luke Landrigan..I think there's info about them on this website!!...

or you could try just hiring a board and going out yourself.The waves are more forgiving at LU and I'm sure the locals wouldn't mind helping you out and giving you some tips along the way if you're not a smartarse bastard to them! Just watch the other surfers,see how they approach everything,then try for yourself.....

I'm surf coaching over here at the mo. and might be heading to LU by December..so maybe I could help you out if need be!Don't worry..I'm not angry or bossy or skanky!

try and get ur hands onto a longboard or mini-mal...

When you're standing against the board with your arm outstretched above ur head...thats the length of the board you should be starting out on.

or you try an old skool shortboard that's got thick rails and is fairly wide.The width of the board helps with stability and the thickness of the board helps with bouyancy.

Don't start out on a shortboard...even tho it may look "cool" it won't help you much in the long run..start out on a battered old fat board and you'll progress faster..thats a common mistake most people starting out make...they think they'll look stupid if they have an old fat board,so they get some shmick little pro model toothpick thats fresh from the factory.You may look good,but you'll get frustrated with the slow paced or nil progression!

it's close onto 2 months now since we've had ANYTHING over 1-2foot.I went to Kirra point at the Goldy on Tuesday and it was the classic clean barrel Kirra..................just at 2-3foot was fun tho,on the old skool,single fin longboards

Looking at heading back to the Phils to live/study around Christmas/New Year-if everything settles down here.My whole family is going over this time(holiday)!!SCARY THOUGHT!!My older brother hasnt surfed out of Oz before,so he's kinda amped about surfing some global waves!I'm looking forward to dropping in on him  

HEY!When I was staying at Ermita-we were checking in and this american guy came up to me cos he saw my boardbag...he's from,I think So Cal and he's lived in the Philippines for 5 years.He's just been travelling/surfing around the Phils for 5 years.He was such a classic character,about 25-30 years old and has turned into such a surfing feral!....he told me about a few places I've never heard of-how to get there and how it works,but I remember he mentioned "Lihim"....hmmm..just wondering if any of you guys have struck him around anywhere before...

I was just wondering if anybody knew about the longboard comp at La Union.It's usually held at the end of January...just wanting to know if it's still happening?

If so...is there still a girls/womens division?or is it ok to compete against the guys?

are ANY of you guys going to be around Davao in December?...I was thinking of hitting the eastern side of Mindanao...stearing clear of Siargao cos I know that about a billion people from Oz are going there this Christmas...slight exaggeration,but I just don't want to be in with the crowd of touro surfers...no offense ok!cos I am one too,but yah..get what I mean!!??I just want to go rough it,search and surf for one month before getting into the routine of the schooling system!..OR!I was thinking of just heading to Samar,Cantanduanes or Camarines...just bloody need an adventure/surfing fix!!! if anybody is keen,hit me back ok! I have no definate plans cos I don't like organised travel,but I do want to surf and it doesnt bother me how we get to where there may be surf.

have any of you guys been to Camarines?I've heard a little about it,but I'm still curious.

true true..in regards to taxi drivers!I was talking to this taxi driver who picked us up from a niteclub in Davao and he was originally from Mati.He's the one who told me about the surf there,he didnt know anything about surfing,but he said that he saw some germans who were surfing there maybe 10 years ago!He gave me some EXTREMELY VAGUE directions.Some friends and I bused,triked,walked and ended up finding some really amazing hard to reach breaks totally away from civilisation and hooked up with the small crew from around mati who know where ALL the good spots are..and the easier-legal-less chance of getting shot at route! ....

ALSO!!The local fishermen in any area thats got..a COASTLINE!!the guys who just live in the ocean!The old guys who have lived there their entire lives,they've got some good insight into the areas that pick up and handle swell.Just listen and be polite!

hahahahahaa ..YEH!!GO the ugly naked kids!ugly naked kids will always win out on those disgustingly beautiful naked kids!...Pet..I think you should explain why you call them UGLY NAKED KIDS...or else you might be up for some certain accusations or being arrested....

try doing YOGA for your back..and your whole body and mind..it'll help keep you flexi,plus when you're 80 you won't be so ceased up!You'll spend more time surfing and less time whinging about the aches and pains of old age!Also a strong core can help prevent lower back pain.Try boxing cos it strengthens your mid and both side abdominals as well as back,shoulders,arms..or just do the same old CRUNCH

or go see your doc cos u might have slipped a disc or f**cked ur back up someway! .....

or stay away from those strip clubs,maybe the after party is wearing you down eh? ...

JUST HAVING FUN WID YA AL!!!! ..hoping your doing well man!

Petrucci and I were talking one day and he was telling me about the kids who surf/surfed in Daet and how they're now all grown up and ripping amoungst the Philippines finest surfers.....THUS the name UGLY NAKED KIDS came about.It's nothing derogatory..well..it's not MEANT to be.That's why I told him to explain the "name" because some people MAY be offended.

Petrucci's passionate about surfing,surfing in Daet and the future of the surfers in Daet and I'm positive he would never do anything intentional to diss his beloved DAET!!

maybe you should lighten up a little yah?.....just a thought....

maybe I could be the OPRAH of surfing yeh?Start my own afternoon chat show,have an audience,set some plush chairs on a stage,good lighting,spunky camera crew and a wholesome and energetic intro to the show..............OR maybe NOT!

I MIGHT be in/around Manila about that time.I was thinking of hiring a van and going trippin round the neighbourhood-thinking of heading to Baler,but I'm not sure about the swell around that time of year...gotta check some stuff out first..but YAH!maybe we could hook up and talk each others ears off yeh!?

Going it alone..hmm..I don't really recommend it if you havent been there since you were 2,but after..I guess you could..you ALWAYS hook up with other travellers/surfers along the way-so you're vary rarely alone.

Psychos and perverts!....I'm psycho,but it's controllable..hahahaha...There was this american ex pat dOOd who offered to take me to La Union in 2000.He was about 60 years old and as greasy as they come man!!He said "I'll take to you La Union,I like surfer girls..I'll take you to the ex army base if you want-show you around"..I was like "ah huh...NOOOOOOOOOO!!GET AWAY YOU PERVERTED OLD BASTARD!!!"...watch out for em ok!They're lurking in the shadows..hahaha.

Yeh..the 80's is making a revival in my life

The prices of boards are pretty hefty these days.There's still a few shapers around who don't contend with the commerical side of it and can keep their prices considerably low.Majority of the time you're just paying for the popularity of the BRAND.The guy that I'm shaping for,his boards are around..for a custom it's about 300-400bucks.Straight out plane shape board is 300 and for a mal around 400-500.He also makes wakeboards,kiteboards and landsailers.He does minimal advertising,it's nearly all word of mouth,but his business is going psycho!!!There's orders from retailers and private buyers from all around Oz and Japan.

anyways...

I checked with the boys on the coast this morning and they said that theres a tiny bit of swell at A-Bay...so hopefully it will start to increase cos everyones going insane here!

MARK!!!!!WE HAVE SWELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AHH!It started pushing through at about 1pm with the wind change..It's about 5 foot at my local break.There's some sections that have opened up,going for about 100metres..walling all the way through to the rocky section There was only about 12 of us out..I think a lot of people didnt expect it to come through so quickly after 4 months of NOTHING.. Duct taped my leg....VERY glamourous YAY!

yeh!!post the piks if it gets huge.I'm not sure if this swell we've got right now will hold up too long.If it does get big I don't think we'll get it,the Goldy might pick it up tho..might have to make a trip down there in between daily life craziness

I met this guy called GRUB at the Manila airport in 2001.He had just come back from surfing at Siargao..I found out he lives like 40minutes from our house!small world.I'm not sure if its the same guy tho?there's lots of GRUBS around.Espesh in Oz!

and yeh...you're right about the filipinos..haha..I'm assuming ur half flip Stacey yah?!You'll probably get the full blown hassle from SOME of the local guys-not ALL OK!!So don't write me back smacking down on me saying I'm stereotyping filipino men!

I was at a market last year near Davao by myself and these 4 local guys were sitting near one of the buildings and they were full on eyeing me out from way over the other side of the market!I kinda bent over to pick some fruit from this stall.I have this chunky tattoo on my lower back and they saw it and when I was leaving,they followed me.I left through this kinda shortcut between 2 buildings(this is near my families house)it's like an alley way..yeh I know..recipe for something bad to happen!!and I could feel them coming up behind me and then they yelled out "nice tattoo girl" and they ran up to me and like I didnt freak out or anything and they asked me if they could see it properly...so I showed them,but one of the guys kinda grabbed me from behind as he was looking at my tatt and I said "um could u please let me go-look!dont touch" and he laughed and didn't let me go so I elbowed him in the gut and ran and jumped on a jeepney that wasnt going anywhere near where I had to go!!hahaha..thats my story.THE END.

No really..don't get into situations like that.Cos it could turn ugly.Sometimes they're harmless and just curious....sometimes not.And sometimes if you're friendly and talkative, they might take it the wrong way and think that you want to jump them or something.Sometimes it's best to keep your chin up lass and JUST KEEP WALKING,but sometimes it's good to throw smartarse remarks right back at them!
but..maybe you shouldnt listen to my advice!

the "friend of a friend" thing ACTUALLY works..and if they do find out,and if ur fam is similar to mine don't be surprised if they send out the city police force to go search for you when they find out you're with a stranger or 5 minutes LATE home,I'm SERIOUS!!...or you could try telling them the truth and if they tell you no because the nasty axe weilding headhunters will get you then start crying and tell them that you've missed out on a whole lifetime(most of anyway) of your Philippines Heritage..and generally crap on...OH MAN..I should shut-up-BAD INFLUENCE....
