Okay it's a little bit of a late thing but did manage to catch the shorebreak at SanNarsico pretty fun on new year's day.
What a great way to start the new year's! Of course did not have a surf board (or any board) but we did'nt care, bodysurfed little barrels with my friend's brothers for about three hours, good fun!
Sun was out, being with friends and enjoying the hangover and some barrleing little shore pounder barrels with lavarocks.... thought that I was out at sandy beach here getting slammed!
Last time I was over in November my friend loaned me what looked like a cross between a sunset gun and a windsurfing board. It wieghed about 20kilos and probably would work inside of a huge barrel just stay away from it if you fall...lol
Drove around with it in the van for days but alas no waves.
The swell was supposed to come but swam away...maybe next time.
Thanks Subic guys for all of the aloha and the wakeboarding at that glassy spot! Was really fun. Even the day when the oil injection pump went out was fun!Atleast we all wakeboarded first!~
Somewhere near there ....is a pretty good pointbreak and another spot but promised not to tell.... not often surfed (probably not often waves) but still a fun one!
Will be there next month to investigate the surf...
and maybe some kiteboarding....
Hawaii has been really glassy and good this past two weeks,up and down swells,light winds,glassy mornings with onshore sea breezes in the afternoons...
maybe I can send some swells over in this e-mail for you guys!

Yes January is a good time the waves are huge but can also travel around the island catch the wrap or surf the inside breaks.
October through Feburay is good.Before and after these months are sometimes good.
Need a car to get around.(Mental Rental?)
When waves are too big at N shore can always drive to west side. E-mail me  at rohos1 at hotmail
Maybe can suggest a few spots.

well as I was reading the posts that I missed in the last month or two while away I just had to laugh at some of the posts.
Let's talk about when the swells are coming (next trip will be on it)Something more happy and positive maybe?
As I was over in Subic bay a few months ago kite boarding,ran out of wind and
I had to swim in and swam through the debri of plastic and film or who knows what...
Let's work on something like not throwing crap in the water!
would be a good start...better than harping on surf tourisim and localisim!!!!!
Face it, surfing in the last ten years has become more mainstream and acceptable.
Anyone old enough or has parents/friends that are to remember the days when surfers were basically outcasts and considered bums and criminals (okay so some of then actually lived the life).
Now we have "Point Break", "Blue crush", Surfer magazine and Ford ranger commercials are showing some guy getting stoked then driving off in his pickup truck.(Banka?)
All that I am saying is that I really don't think you guys have to ever worry about having the next pipeline or sunset in your backyard and even if you did would'nt be the end of the world.
Yes there are the greedy developers ect but for some reason the people that actually live in the areas where the surf is good (or atleast here) have kept out the hotels (in HI)and the larger development but not without a fight.
I am not comparing a democratic area to a thrid world area here just stating the facts...
All I know is that after several trips to PI have never really caught epic waves (okay a few ) but have met some really cool people that are friendly and basically honest hard working people.
Maybe one day will get down there to catch some real surf down south
And maybe then I will be labeled as another "surf tourist"  that is "taking our waves" (oh crap) waaaa baby
well come join us at the north shore next winter and see what a crowd is really like!
but at the same time drive down the road to that reefy sharky place with the best bowl all by yourself...as well
..in the meantime.....
I live on an island with 1.1 million people and it seems like about 100,000 of then surf,you still can find places to surf look around just caught **&^&^* break by myself...
Because of the remote places with less than consistant surf, places like indo and other islands look better for the tourists....
If you came to my break I would respect you as long as you treated me with respect right?
actually would be happy because now there's more bait...loYes it would suck to see my favorite break in an intenet website of "hiiden surf" magazine but you know you had to tell someone who told someone else too,

Yes that R-3 is the best kite to learn on, it relaunches easily and is a "magic kite",might want to later change to the newer "center saftey release" but the kite works killer.
I would say that the wind range depends on how big a board and your ability.
Using my friend's wakeboard it worked well at average 12-15 knots+ (not sure how many btu's) Anyway the winds at Subic are sort of fickle to say the least but from now on always travel with my kite!
In the mornings to early afternoon from Olongapo side the winds are offshore and mostly light, in the afternoons the winds turn straight onshore.Allot of deep water but probably more windy areas that are deep with safe landing zone downwind to kite in PI,
I had a blast I took my R-3 17.0 (14 projected) I think that I was the only guy that ever kited out there, good fun.
Talk about looking like an alien from outer space landing accrost the bay downwind  on the beach catching a Banka back...smile,
So when there's not extreme winds and steady with boat support not too bad because sometimes hard to make the upwind trek, as winds change in the middle sometimes...I have gotten much better and upgraded to faster kites but that 14.0 r3 is magic! just be careful out there and get instruction, more water time the better
work on self landing/self rescue
always depower by wrapping one line several meters first onto bar in case you are in water and need to depower kite (with kite in water)

well originally from Florida but never got into surfing until later,north FL has cool water in the winter and some fun low pressure swells and wind swells...shortboard never learned on a longboard...later went to Hawaii found out there's surf twenty days out of thirty rest is history
surf spots more reef, rocks and sharks the better (less people) yep that's whacthamacallit spot, my favorite!

Okay It was late and nightshift.......

was surfing the web and looked in "yahoo" and "google" search under "Philippine surf".
A website came up with a surf camp and looked like they stole (okay borrowed) the whole look and feel of this website.
Maybe it is just a coincidence but looks like a carbon copy of the PI surf website(?)

wow we could go on (and on),,,longboards vs short boards vs skim boards vs body boards vs kite boards,,,lol

We are all in the water and sharing the stoke, I have had some days body surfing shorebreak or walking the beach picking up garbage and had just as much fun (okay amost as much) as riding ripping waves with my board.

I think that this choice is up to the person and thier style and level of surfing/balance/strength/patience/chi/gya

well never really surfed a longboard when I started surfing
But did learn how to get up and ride cranking shorebreak and bail survival...lol
Most of my longboards are 9'4 guns used for those rare days when I feellike riding something over 8' hawaii size

It takes a little longer to learn shortboarding than longboarding, sure

but if you want to get into the waves making super late drops and make allot of turns, off the lips mini airs and three sixteys the only way,
Sure there are people like my friends that can rip a longboard and do some cool stuff but most peoplelearning are happy just to stand up and look like "hey I am surfing"
This is good I guess for learning but will these same people ever give up that plank and be able to make that long air drop into a barrel later on?
longboards are great for when the surf is all blown out and mushy barely rideable.
So now went from having never owned a longboard to owning one, it sits stratigically placed in my yard waiting for teaching someone how to stand up on and when there's summer mushy waves to ride...and they are fun and a good workout too! that huge board works those arms out good...not to mention how you have to duck die (not dive) that monster
Those "potato stick" shapes that they push at the surf shops work fine for someone who is light and a strong paddler but for mushy small waves and us bigger guys a thicker board and a lttle wider, thicker or longer is the trick.
Thickness seems to be a trade in flotation to speed, narrowed rails work.Have a thinner board that is really fast but because of my weight paddles harder.

Special time there getting to see friends hani family and hoping for some swells in the china sea.

maybe get some wrap around never know but yes that time of the year is all about the Pacific.
The pacific ocean side was huge (7-9 ft plus backs) on the last trip.Bet that Baler place was good if it was'nt too big!
 Could'nt take the time to make the 9 hour one way winding mountain road from heck drive to surf that side of Luzon.
(but sure wanted to)

There was even some freak typhoon off of Japan last trip end of Dec 03/Jan04. Had some giant (in the ocean 10-20 feet+ Hawaii size) waves at the tip of Luzon wrapping all the way down to zambales.

By the time I got there of course the swell had passed.
We were on china sea side.Us working people only get the time to pass through and limited travel time (wa) so have to make the best of it.

Thanks for the advice on the kite sizes. Yes that place north of there is better direction and strength for sure.
Nice beaches and water quality is better too.

Might have to make the trek to Cebu/Sariago/"secret"(?) spot or take the "mountain road rally" drive challenge.

All that I can comment is that even in Oahu Hawaii we seldon get perfect conditions but since we are on the pacific side we do get allot of surfing days.
As far as the Crystal Beach place, never surfed there or really caught any surf in Zambales but have just missed swells over there a few times, sort of like Florida the waves are fun when they are on either from Low Pressure ground swells or typhoons (hurricanes) typically the first day is all clean and really small or super windy blown out, after the storms move off or away sometimes cleans up and a few days or a day of great waves are to be had.
  Have to get some waves there so can tell but when I went to a super nice place in Zambales the potenial for sick waves was everywhere! one place was a beach break another a point break and some killer reef breaks offshore!  
  Wow all that we needed was some swells...
My friends said that the two or three days before that was all time epic off shore glassy and 4 feet plus maybe 6 ft (2 meters)
so see you out there and hope for some fun waves on my next trip home
