| --->beginner<-- Im a filipino surfer from east coast of Nova Scotia way north of Long Island. To answer some of your question you should stick to long board for a while to get your balance and get use to the wave.If you decided to purchase a short board pick an east coast brand not the designer(Merrick,Rusty, etc.) from California. It doesnt work in the east coast waves(In my experience) unless you want to charge bigger waves in the winter or hurricane season.Wave Riding Vehicle boards are good.7.0 0r 7.5 shortboard would do for a Long Island breaks.
