     Hey ocean, take everybody else's advise. Try it out first. It's gonna be a waste of money if you buy a board that's new and you are only stating out. I'd advise you learn to surf before buying one.
     In case you wanna learn and rent boards, let me know.

Hey hydrophobia, I just need some piece of advice. When does a newbie longboarder shift to shortboard. In my case I've learned to surf just 5 months ago and somewhat could handle a longboard. Any recommendations? Thanks again.

    Hey vince914, I'm a beginner too so don't ask me...   ... but I'll try pour in whatever i know.
     As to when you can shift to a shortboard is up to u. Some even start with a shortboard right away. I guess u know the basics but there are some (or a lot of) differences. There's duck diving and stuff like that.

 
ei,1st rent a shortboard that fits,consider your heigth and weight!your gonna have a hard time with the transition but once you got the hang of it,its gonna be one fluid stroke!

heya vince...
what size longboard are you on right now?..if you're on a board over 8foot,it's best to go down to something around 7foot,down to about 6'8/6'10,but still try to find something that has a little bit more thickness and width to it.

It's better to gradually progress down in size because a shortboard is far more responsive than a longboard.It's really important that you have a solid bottom turn,cutback and trim speed happening before jumping down onto anything smaller.

Taking things in stages,going down in size gradually will also help you develop a fluid style and kick arse turning skills!If you auto. go down from say a 9'1 to a 6'1...you're style and anything you have ever learnt will go out the door!Your surfing will become all jerky and it'll feel horrible as well.With shortboarding the most important thing is to maintain board speed,unlike longboards which pretty much maintain their own speed.

like knefut said,borrow or rent a 2nd hand board before you rush into buying something that might not be right for you.

Hi Millie,

I've been more steady with a 9 footer (these are the boards being rented at surf camp) and tried their 8 footer as well and yet still quite ok. In fact I am looking for a longboard as well as a shortboard for myself.
Anyway, thanks for the tips.I'll probably work on the mini-mal first and be comfortable with that before I move on the shortboard.
