I got a question for everyone....How does storms off the Aleutian or North Pacific affects the quality of the waves in Eastern Phil? How long does the waves hits the Phil shores?

I know Tropical Storms by Guam (North East from PI), which is closer produces really good waves on North East facing beaches in the the Pacific Coast.

They dont. Aleutian storms affect Hawaii and West coast USA.
PI east coast gets swell from NE Monsoon and tropical storms or typhoons.
West coast PI gets its best swell from the strong winds through the Taiwan Straights during the NE Monsoon and the occasional typhoon as it heads towards Hong Kong.
Swells do not like to go around corners which is why boats like to shelter in the lee side (where there is no wind) of an island. Its as simple as that.

I've experience good swells that are generated in the southern Hemisphere (storms from New Zealand area) that hits norcal and socal (beaches that Channel Island is not blocking) a week later. I mean, clean swells....

Just like a big Pond (Pacific Ocean), if there is a disturbance in one side of the pond, one way or the other, the swell will hit the other side of the pond, might take awhile, as long as nothing is blocking the path, the swells should hit the eastern side of PI.

And yeah....western side of PI doesn't get affected by the storms off the Pacifc, unless its right there in HK or Taiwan...that I know .....was asking about the eastern side, ie.. Pacific Ocean side...

I'm asking because, there is a big storm of Aleutian right now, and looking at the

"https://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/products/WAM/npac_swht_000.gif"< /a>

website, you can see swell movements going towards "Eastern" side of PI.

So, one way of the other.....there should be some good clean swells hitting the "eastern beaches" meaning the Pacific side....

Folks, from research and a few years of personal experience I can tell you that when some of these storms first come off of China and cross Japan (before they head across the Great Northern Circle path), they can send some big surf down that will at least get into the South China Sea. And when that happens (at least about once a month in winter), N adn NW Luzon can get some Hawaiian-style power.

I wouldn't actually say they get Hawaiian style power they just get big surf. The swell hasn't really travelled far enough and built up enough intensity to be termed "Hawaiian style power" but then again that is just my opinion and I may be wrong considering I have never surfed in Hawaii. I have surfed N and NW Philippines in some large surf though and it doesn't come anywhere in comparrison with the power of any of the waves I have surfed on the east coast. There could be exceptions to this though I wouldn't believe it to be the Norm.
All the best for Christmas hope it's filled with waves and fun.

Hey Quin hows the chopper expedition coming along.
Cheers

I will not get into a row over if the Philippines has more power than the North Shore of Hawaii because I'd be a fool  to take such a positon.  tongueYet I've gotten hit hard by big waves at Cloud 9 and some unnamed reefbreaks up north that had just as much power as Hawaii in the winter. undecided It all depends on the swell and the break. They don't compare C9 to Backdoor for nothing. As for the north, they take the brunt of many of the winter storms. If you are surfins a shallow reef break facing a powerful storm off Japan or Kamtcha that's sending surf directly at the coast, believe me, it's got some real N-Pac juice! The waves may not have as much time to wind up, but their raw energy can kick some serious butt. As per the helicopter tour, I was all set to go over late November but typhoon Nanmadol came and so the place I was going to go check out got whacked. Also the few private helicopter businesses were requested by the government to help with the rescue effort. Will have to try to reschdule much later during better days....  cry

Hey what's up to all? For all it's worth, (not much really  smiley...

I have surfed both cld 9 and backdoor pipe and i'ld have to say that they definately compare. As a matter of fact I saw cloud 9 eat more boards in one morning than my eyes could believe!

so what's up with the chopper tour? I was in siargao and  samar two weeks ago and am already thinking about taking a little tour back up to N. luzon after Christmas. Any takers?

I didn't say that places like C9, Majestics or other east coast spots cannot be compared with Hawaiian style power I merely stated that I wouldn't think that the spots in the N or NW coasts would. I have surfed several breaks on the east coast that are powerful. I have surfed none on the west coast that can even come close.
Cheers hope your getting some waves wherever you are wink

Quin that will be the downside to the chopper trip. You just don't know when a massive typhoon will hit. Imagine if you had left a week earlier and were stuck out there in it. You would still be out there probably forgotten about. The unfortunate thing is that you have to go during the typhoon season so you can score the waves. Good luck with the venture but like a lot of things in the PI it is fraught with danger and possible failure.
Best to pick out the spot and catch a boat. Cheaper and probably more reliable (maybe). Just not quicker.
For those of you who celebrate christmas. Happy Christmas.
For those who don't Happy whatever.
Cheers. Hope your getting better waves than us at the moment. wink
