Hi everone back in aust now,have you all seen jan edition of tracks Asia;s new superwave 15 foot what do you think mark?  

Hi Agnes how was the trip. Successful I hope.
The pics in this months tracks were very inviting and it looks like Scott and John have come across another fine setup in the PI. They make one comment that is a little disturbing in the article though which I will add wasnt written by either John or Scott and that was this wave should dispel the myth of the Philippines being known as the fickle Pines. One decent swell doesnt change the place. The "Superwave" (where do they get these names) will be no more consistant than any other place in the PI and it looks to be a place that experienced surfers should only attempt. I couldnt imagine good hospital facilities to be close at hand but I could be wrong. The other drawback is that if you dont go with Scott you probably will never find it. I am sure they are not going to divulge the whereabouts for a while at least. I am sure on their day there would be over a hundred spots breaking like that in the PI the trick is to be there when its happening. Unfortunately most of us probably have to work to get by in life so we cant spend eternity waiting for the right swell to happen and unfortunately in the PI it could take an eternity.
Anyway the place had to eventually open up to surfers and as you and I both know Agnes there is a better place than the "Superwave" to surf although I dont think you can surf it at 15foot but then again I didnt see any 15footers in the pics in tracks either. Nor were there any pics of Andy King taking off on the peak which means the place must be super heavy because Andy has no problems mixing it up in the big stuff. You can probably look forward to the pros wanting to surf the place now which will open up the country possibly like what happened in Indo. The thing most people will like is that there is only about 30 local surfers in the country. Going by the people on this post I can imagine there are a lot more than that but maybe if you are not a local at Cloud Nine then you are not a true Filipino surfer. Who knows.
Surf is still OK in this part of the world.

I thought that the "newly discovered Super wave" looked kinda familier. I've saved a lot of old surfing type magazines over the years that had any thing to do with the Philippines in them. And lo and behold, in the June 1997 issue of Surfing magazine you will find several pictures of what I guess can't be called the "newly discoverd" wave anymore. It was a quite large, rather silly story of "discovery" titled "White Men with Surfboards, A Virgin Voyage Through Uncharted Asain Waters" Photos by John Callahan, "story" by Tor Johnson. Along with pictures of the super wave [ at about 8 ft. ] were the usual pictures of Cloud 9, Rock Island etc. It's almost 2004, friends. I doubt there are many waves left on this earth that one could claim as 'newly discovered'.

Very synical Jerry Im sure there are plenty of yet to be discovered places in the PI. I suppose if someone comes across a particular setup and doesnt tell anyone about it then the next person to come along probably thinks they discovered it Im not sure how that works. Anyway how many 15ft plus swells have you seen in all your travels to the PI, I personally have only seen 2 and a couple of mates who are regular travellers have yet to see a massive swell (rideable one that is)so if people flock to the PI because of a front page photo in tracks then unfortunately the majority of them will probably be disappointed. Then again maybe the new surf explorer has a magic wand to wave and the swell instantly comes up. Who knows? I certainly dont.
Email me the pic and I will get my mate to ask the tracks editor why he says they discovered it although I am not sure they actually said that.

It's just my own opinion, but the word "discoverd" to me would mean a place no one had surfed before, EVER. And as you know Mark, there are probebly tens of thousands of traveling surfers like your self who surf the world over and probebly have a hard time telling their best friends about their discoveries, let alone going so far as to put them in magazines for the hoardes to see. My point is [ I think ] is here we have two groups, both claiming discovery while I suspect there is a good chance there were others that surfed this spot and would never tell a soul. I'll send you the pictures out of the mag. We don't get Tracks here, only Australian Surfing Life. I saw the Tracks pictures online. So I diden't see all of them and couldent reed the story.

I will just say you don't need to get on the yacht to surf the wave, and locals know the spot. Jerry is correct. It's the same wave. Rock formations (and its color) seen behind the wave are very distinctive. The boat trip lucked on a good swell last October.

Hi mark,trip did not go as well as planned but all is ok. Was dissapointed when arrived at puraran,but that is another story.What you said early is totally correct there is plenty of unriden waves in PI.Just search and you will be rewarded.My father who still lives in catanduanes can remember surfers way back 30 yrs ago visiting catanduanes. Whomever made the connection between the "Superwave" and my previous material from 1997 is correct. It is the same wave we found on a boat charter with Torsten, Chris, Sean, ect six years ago and published initially in ING, later in Surfer, and a cover shot of Chris Malloy for Action Asia in Hong Kong. If the Tracks angle is they discovered a new wave; sorry but that just isn't true.

Very isolated place, locals said in 97 we were the first Kanos to visit since the US Marines left at the end of WWII. Scott and others have surfed it since 97 but not at size - and it does pick up a lot of swell. A LOT of swell. I've tried to get some pals onto a boat to go out there, but no one seems very interested.

I did not even want to go there this season, as it is very isolated, quite a heavy wave, most of our crew had broken most of their boards after a week of barrelling C9, and what if they break the rest of their boards and even worse; get seriously hurt in the middle of nowhere the first day of a boat charter?
